#94: Mama Artificial Chicken Flavour Oriental Style Instant Noodles

Okay so first off, here we go with the MAMA noodles. I really didn’t expect to like these but what can I say – not too bad. Mi Ga it says on the top left – Ga means chicken in Vietnamese – I know that much. Interesting as this is a Thai product.

A gooey one and a dual packet of chili pepper and seasoning powder. Very reminiscent of Indomie’s packaging methods.

I liked how everyone stayed in their own spot for this picture; its like they wanted to separately pose for the picture.

Click image to enlarge. Separately posing instant noodle flavoring packet contents. Yeah I’ve lost it. Anyways yes that was aall of the chili packet you saw. This stuff’s a little spicy, a little greasy and the noodles are ready to chow down on crunchy and all if you wanna go that route. My reviews? I’m spotting MAMA here a 2.5 out of 5 – mainly due to the fact that chicken flavor was nowhere to be found. I think you should first and foremost try to keep to the labelling and chicken flavored this isn’t. Get it here.

#109: Mama Instant Pad Thai Noodles

So some Pad Thai by Mama. This should be interesting – I’ve had Pad Thai before at a restaurant and its not too bad so we’ll see how it stands up here.

Rice noodles – should cook pretty fast. These are much different than wheat noodles; when theyre done that’s it. Don’t overcook for real or its blobby time.

A packet of packets…

Main seasoning, oil and chili powder.

So these spices await some dried rice noodles and a good long stir…

Here you have a bowl of Mama Pad Thai (click image to enlarge). I used all of the packets. It had a sweet yet spicy taste. Not too saucy as far as Pad Thai sauce goes – perhaps drain a little less well by just a slight amount? All in all, I liked this very much. It was very easy. The noodles kind’ve got a little sticky but nothing I didn’t expect. I’m giving this 3.1 out of 5.0 stars – I genuinely liked it. Get it here.

Nam Vang? Phnom Penh style? Looks interesting to be sure. A lot of words on this bag!

Rice noodles – like the Pad Thai in the similar packaging…

Packets in a packet…

Packets! Powder and goop.

As I said above, powder and goop.

Click image to enlarge. The noodles are nice and soft, the soup was nicely flavored – not sure exactly what flavor I’d call it; maybe like a meat broth? Lots of little bits of vegetable in it. I like it. 1 1/2 cups water. A little sweet. Ah I see – sugar, shallots and msg. Okay I like it. 3.6 out of 5.0 stars.

#534: Mama Pho Ga Oriental Style Instant Chand Noodles Chicken Flavour

So here’s something new – pho. Chicken pho. I think this probably won’t live up to its name but we’ll see.

One pouch…

Houses two packets… One powder one oil.

The oil is dark but I m not sure what it is – don’t think its sesame oil. The ingredients list on the back is definitely short quite a bit…

So yeah before anyone yells about it, the put sat on the stove for a couple more minutes than it should – I was putting dishes away. So it has the nice aroma of pho you’d get down the street from here. It’s got that basil and bean sprout melange scent and the basil taste is there just enough. List chicken flavor. I think it all goes together quite nicely. The noodles were a bit mushy but that was my fault and I know these noodles aren’t bad as they’re the same as in the Pad Thai and Nam Vang. This was good but it was really lacking something… A vegetable packet. What’s more, the vegetable packet would need the fresh stuff and I don’t know how they’d do that. I’m giving these noodles a 3.1 out of 5 stars. The highlight here was the broth and the noodles weren’t bad but I really would like some kind of vegetable packet here. Get it here.

#537: Mama Instant Noodle Pad Kee Mao Flavour (Drunken Noodles)

Mama Pad Kee Mao… The pack is shiny and shows a seriously elaborate dish… Not really much of anything in English on this one.

Three packets – something gushy, dry powder and chili powder.

So the bottom there is the gushy stuff. Wow. that’s pretty bizarre. Smells interesting too… Mentions basil leaf and bergamot leaf in the ingredients…

Click image to enlarge. So on this one you cook the noodles in a cup and a half of water, drain and then stir it all up. Here’s the finished result.  It’s quite spicy with the chili powder in it. Its got a very funky flavor too. I dunno… I’m not Thai and I think this is a Thai flavor I just don’t understand… So I have to rate this on my taste buds…The noodles are great – they’re just like Indomie’s special fried curly noodles, but whats a trip is that they’re the eat without cooking variety as well. In fact on the sticker on the back which contains the English nutrition facts, it says serve as dried noodles. Once I took the sticker off the directions were revealed. The same directions were at the bottom of the sticker too. Very odd… Anyways, they’re hot but taste funny. The noodle awesomeness just doesn’t make up for that. I’m giving this one 2.0 out of 5.0 stars.

UPDATE – So after looking around, I found a Wikipedia entry about Pad Kee Mao:

Drunken noodles (or Pad Kee Mao, less frequently Pad Ki Mao or Pad Kimao, Lao: ຜັດຂີ້ເມົາ; Thai: ผัดขี้เมา, RTGS: phat khimao, [pʰàt kʰîːmaw]) is a Chinese-influenced dish that was made popular by the Chinese people living in Laos and Thailand. It is a stir fried noodle dish very similar to Phat Si Io, but with a slightly different flavor profile. It is made with broad rice noodles, soy sauce, fish sauce, garlic, meat or tofu, bean sprouts, and various seasonings. Chili and basil give rise to its distinctive spiciness. Drunken fried rice or khao phat khimao is a similar dish.

Wikipedia contributors. “Drunken noodles.” Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, 26 Aug. 2010. Web. 29 Aug. 2010

So there’s a little more info about it… That being known though, it didn’t make the noodles taste any better hah!

#126: Mama Instant Rice Vermicelli Tom Yam Koong Flavour

So this is an interesting one. The package weighs practically nothing and the noodle blocks is extremely thin. Weirdness….

The noodles and very very thin like angel hair pasta, but it’s rice noodle.

A packet…

Of packets. A paste and a powder.

Looks like a sambal of some sort – thick and very red like fire! The powder is ample.

Click image to enlarge. The paste was hot – and lemony – at least I think thats where the citrus flavor has come from. Not a lot here – small package. Strange stuff – don’t really enjoy it. I’m going to have to say that thwe rice vermicelli is okay though, but its just a little… Boring even with the spiciness. I’m giving it a 1.5 out of 5.0 stars. Don’t like this one.

#128: Mama Oriental Style Instant Noodles Artificial PA-LO Duck Flavour

Okay. Last time I had duck noodles was a long long time ago and it was Myojo’s hat in the ring. Now here’s Mama’s duck flavor.

Goop, powder and chili flake.

Well there they are in the bowl waiting for the broth and noodles…

Click image to enlarge. Instantly the smell of oddness filled the room. My lady make a stink face immediately. The smell really repulsed me. I don’t like it. The noodles themselves were fine. The broth stunk and was way too salty. Now this isn’t me saying I’ve had duck and think it tastes nothing like duck – I don’t know what duck tastes like. I do know however that I don’t like this stuff and if it tastes like duck, then it’d be logical to surmise that I don’t like real duck. Had a kind of chemical-like overtone to it. I couldn’t finish it either. Whomever likes this stuff is out of my league as far as taste buds go. I’m giving this one a 0.1 out of 5.0 stars. The noodles were okay but the broth was repulsive. Get it here.

#136: Mama Shrimp Creamy Tom Yum Flavour Oriental Style Instant Noodles

Some noodles from Thailand today. I’ve reviewed some noodles that are by Mama and Tom Yum but not the creamy.

Chili powder, dry seasoning sachet and seasing paste/oil.

I just can’t get over how nasty some of the seasoning pastes look in the bowl.

So here’s the finished product (click image to enlarge). Noodles were good but it was quite spicy, not creamy and really didn’t taste at all like shrimp that I could detect. Get it here.

I’m also going to say this is the greasiest looking stuff yet. The cream and the red stuff was repulsing each other like crazy – it looked really neat but was kind of well gross. I’m tossing this a 2.0 out of 5.0 stars.

#140: Mama Mi Goreng Oriental Style Instant Noodles

So one of my favorite all time noodles is Indomie Mi Goreng Satay. I was very pleased to see that there was a new Mi Goreng out there – at least new to me.

The standard Mama brand’s packet of packets.

Four packets – the most I’ve seen in a Mama package yet.

So the white packet had seasoned oil as well as sweet soy sauce. Very interesting…

This is the finished product (click image to enlarge). Drop an egg on top and some pickled ginger and fried shallot and boo yah perfection. I’m giving this the same score as Indomie’s as it is practically identical. 5.0 / 5.0 stars!!! More veggies though and some nice chili powder to boot. Get it here.

So what can I say – cheap noodles are fun too. These are from Thailand and called Mamy but they’re Mama brand…

Didn’t have to open the powder to know it was delicious! That’s handy!

Chili, powder and oil.

Click image to enlarge. Rice noodles, was spicy from the chili… Noodles were good but nota lot of backbone. 2.75 / 5.0 stars. Get it Here.

#146: Mama Pho Bo Oriental Style Instant Chand Noodles Beef Flavor

So I like Pho noodles I’ve gotten around here from the various little restaurants. Usually I get some variety of beef Pho. Let’s see how this stacks up to the real thing…

Seasoned Oil and powder…

Here they are awaiting their bath…

Click image to enlarge. First off, rice noodles. Second, when I dumped the noodles and boiling water in it started to smell much like regular Pho from down the street. But it isn’t the same. First off, rice noodles are here, but they’re not by any means close to the same chewy and thick version. The broth smelled good but was overly salty and not enough of that Pho goodness. I wish it didn’t say it was Pho; it let me down. It’s good though… I’m giving it 2.5 out of 5.0 stars; it’s good but not super good and would be better if it wasn’t called Pho.

#158: Mama JokCup Artificial Pork Flavour Instant Porridge Soup

Pork porridge. Let me refine that – ARTIFICIAL pork porridge. Those three words have been kind of interesting to say while this little cup has been kicking it around here. But no more. Artificial pork porridge is lunch.

I like the little graphic of the pig happy as can be  that he isn’t in this cup of porridge. He’s probably also relieved that most people don’t go into a restaurant and request as to the special of the day and hear ‘pork porridge.’

So here’s the end result. It came with a plastic spoon but it wasn’t my style. So you’re probably wondering what the heck pork porridge – that is artificial pork porridge – tastes like? Well, imagine Cream of Wheat but salty and with bits of onions in there and you’ve pretty much nailed it. It’s surprisingly good to be honest. So even though this wasn’t noodles, it was an instant affair in a cup. I see for it to be treated the same. I give this stuff 2.5 out of 5.0 stars; it was good but I couldn’t really see ever getting it other than for novelty and it really doesn’t give any feeling of satiation after eating it; more of a ‘wow that was full of sodium’ kind of feeling and 1170mg is a lot but much lower than most things of this nature.

#159: Mama Hot & Spicy Flavor Oriental Style Instant Noodles

Some hot stuff from Mama here today. We’ll see if it’s really hot and spicy…

I liked the fuchsia dual pack – that bright pink is the same color of the hottest peppers in the world! We’ve got a veggie packet, a red pepper powder and a soup base here…

I really like the colors on this one a lot – bright and vivid.

Click image to enlarge. So I altered the recipe just a skosh today – added two small fried eggs and some green onion. Yep – this stuff was very hot as far as instant noodles go. The noodles were of a rather uninteresting nature and kind of rude and impersonal. Not what I expected since trying this new line of packaged instant noodles by Mama – I had the Mi Goreng last month and raved about it. So eggs and green onions perked this stuff up a lot. I’m going to give this a 1.75 stars w/o the alteration and a 2.75 with and combine them for an overall 2.25 stars out of 5.0. Get it here.

#172: Mama Oriental Style Instant Flat Noodles (Tom Yam)

So I asked Kit to pick out two packs of noodles for me to try next. Here’s the first one. I’m curious whether it’ll be any good; the Mama brand has reviews on here from 1 to 4 stars so we’ll just have to see. By the way, on the back in two places it says tom yum instead of tom yam like it does on the front. I’m going to go with tom yum being correct and the yam being a typo.

Chili powder, soup base and flavored oil.

The oil was interesting on this one to be sure – very light in color.

Click image to enlarge. I’m going to say I really really enjoy the noodles – they’re wide rice noodles. They’re different; I’ve had wide egg noodles but never ones that were this long! The soup is almost cryptic; I used half the chili powder and its still got a nice heat. The oil adds a bit of interesting oomph to it and the base dissolved almost completely. I have a sore throat and this is pretty nice so far. Not a lot of vegetable action here… Anyways, this is rather unique and enjoyable. I’m giving it 3.75 out of 5.0 stars.

So some more of Mama’s stuff. Very thin noodles – VERY thin!

Chili powder, powder and seasoned oil.

Small amounts…

Click image to enlarge. For clear soup, I’m really surprised how not clear it is. The noodles were pretty good, the soup was salty and odd and the chili powder got it pretty hot. Vegetables are not present. Well, there are veggies but nothing really to speak  of… So I’m going to give this a 2.0 out of 5.0 stars… Wasn’t great. Get it here.

#179: Mama Kimchi Flavour Oriental Style Instant Noodles

Some Kimchi flavor from Thailand! Should be interesting. I’m going to doctor it up today with quite a few ingredients. One thing kind of interesting is that there is currently a cabbage shortage in Korea, where Kimchi is so widely consumed. Here is an article about it – thanks for the info Kit!

Three packets – soup base, chili powder and some dehydrated vegetables.

Here they sit awaiting the noodles and 400ml of water that they cooked in.

So here’s the finished product before I did anything to it. I found the noodles nice – thicker than I expected. The broth is a little spicy and there are sonme nice veggies. At this point, I would give it a 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. Nothing really to write home about. Now the makeover.

Some soft yolk fried eggs to start…

Kizami shoga adds a little color and bite…

Four dollops of Jufran hot banana sauce…

Some crunchy fried shallots are added…

Finally, a teaspoon of minced garlic right in the middle. This completely changes the game a lot. First off, the egg runs into the broth, making it slightly creamy and hearty. The pickled ginger adds a little acidic nip to the feel of the dish. Plus, the crunch of the ginger makes it have a slight reminiscence to the crunch of cabbage in kimchi (I know I’m reaching here but bear with me). The garlic gives a bit of growl. I think it all wraps together into a concoction of perfection. At this point, it gets 4.75 out of 5.0 stars. So to complete this review, 4.75+3.0 = 7.75 / 2 = 3.875 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here.

So thought I’d give it a whirl. This is one of the few I haven’t tried left at 99 Ranch Market! I see a problem coming on and I don’t like it!

Pepper, powder, seasoned oil.

Clockwise from top: seasoned oil, pepper, powder base.

Click image to enlarge. So thought I’d toss an egg in for the first time with a Mama noodle pack. So first off, it smells rather foul. I take a bite… Noodles are good – chewy and firm. Spicy flavor there…  Broth is very flavorful – a lot going on there. Heat and some oil and spices. I like this despite feeling a little put off by its smell initially. 3.0 out of 5.0 stars. Not jumbo packs, but you can get it here.

So here’s something new – Mama’s Oriental Kitchen… Let’s try…

Usually Mama’s got more packets – not this time.

Quite a bit of powder! Veggies look interesting.

Click image to enlarge. The finished product. A bit spicy and the noodles are nice. I like the veggies too, and I liked enjoying the delicious – see below…

I did enjoy the delicious – and it is delicious! 3.75 out of 5.0 stars. Get it here.
